While studying law at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, I wanted to gain practical experience. What does the professional practice of a lawyer look like was one of my learning objectives. After my internship at Julien Luscuere Lawyers, I will study for six months at Istanbul University at the law faculty, where I will take various subjects such as international immigration law, public and private international law, and European competition law.

I fled to the Netherlands, but my asylum application was never granted. When the general pardon came into effect, mr. Luscuere assisted me on the long road to finally obtaining Dutch nationality. In 2007, the general pardon application was granted with the help of former partner mr. Merijn de Jong. I am grateful to him and mr. Luscuere for the trust and compassion he and his team showed. They provided clarity, courage and support. My life has completely changed after obtaining legal residence in the Netherlands. I found work, was able to go to school and was able to start a family. In 2022 I will be counted in possession of Dutch Nationality.

I lived in the Netherlands for 1.5 years without a Residence Permit waiting for IND’s decision. In this time period, I felt very paranoid and felt like I was not welcome anywhere. I could not work, I could not do anything with the Gemeente, I could not access health insurance. I felt like I was an illegal person and as a Japanese person, this made me very uncomfortable.
